Strange are the ways of admirers. Sometimes it's bouquets and sometimes it's brickbats. For Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, his
28th birthday on Tuesday was certainly made memorable by his fans in his hometown. Cakes, laddoos, dance
, drama, gifts and bursting of firecrackers summed up MSD's b-day bash. Fans hugged each other and offered cakes to his giant posters. Though Ms.Dhoni was not in Ranchi, hundreds of his fans assembled at Mecon Stadium to celebrate.
Ms.Dhoni being the country's most eligible bachelor, had more girls queueing up for a slice of his birthday cake than boys. "Happy birthday my love! Ms.Dhoni tum jiyo hazaro saal, but only with me!" shouted the girls in unison.
"I can miss my birthday but not Ms.Dhoni's. I have come here with my friends to celebrate his birthday," gushed Priyanka, a student of Nirmala College.
Members of the Ms.Dhoni Fan Club came out on the streets with a specially designed Dhoni Rath. The chariot contained 42 photos of the cricketer, right from his childhood to captaincy. Several bikers took out a motorcycle procession with the chariot.
" Ms.Dhoni likes bikes. That's why we organised this procession with bikers to convey our wishes," said a fan.
Ranchi was bathed with banners wishing the pin-up icon good wishes.
Kaya saloon, where Ms.Dhoni got a hair cut when he was in town, offered customers 28 per cent discount on Tuesday. This was a special offer for his birthday.
Fans of Ms.Dhoni also enacted a play, A Story of Ms.Dhoni, based on the struggle and triumph of Ms.Dhoni in his cricketing career. Tribal fans performed a tribal dance.
" Ms.Dhoni is the pride of Jharkhand and we wish he gives his best to India," said Nargis, a college student.
President of Ms.Dhoni Fan Club, Jitender Singh, said they cut a 90-pound cake after placing it before Ms.Dhoni's poster. "We sang a birthday duet and wished him a very bright future. Ms.Dhoni has a special craving for laddoos and so a huge laddoo was also offered to his poster."
The cake was shaped in the form of a cricket ground with Ms.Dhoni on the field. "We wish India keeps winning tournaments under his stewardship," said Singh, adding that the club has taken a resolve to set up a cricket academy for talents from deprived sections of society.
Ironically, it was only a few days ago that a section of cricket lovers here burnt his effigy after India was defeated at the T-20 semi finals in UK. But then public memory is short and nothing succeeds like success.
His former coach Chanchal Bhattacharya said he was happy to see his fans taking so much trouble to celebrate his birthday. "There was a time when no one thought much about Ms.Dhoni and his birthday would be like any other day. Now I feel proud of him."
Born here in 1981, Ms.Dhoni grew up in Mecon Colony. The skipper's father was an employee with Mecon, a public sector undertaking.
Since the birthday boy was not personally present, well-wishers presented gifts to his parents and other family members.
