Movie Rating: 3/5
First of all things! The director's weakest film is the long delayed Enai Noki Paayum Thotta by Gautham Menon. The film's main weakness is the director's fascination with narrative style voice-over. It was good before Gautham used voice-over as a medium to tell his stories, but every scene in Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta begins and ends with Dhanush's voice-over, which irritates us after a point. The film is filled with tired stereotypes, and at a runtime of 157 minutes it is an unsatisfying watch.
Like any other movie from Gautham Menon, here too hero Raghu (Dhanush) is a student of engineering, but this time his wife is not a student, but a film heroine Lekha (Mega Akash). She tells him she is not interested in movies and her boss Kuberan (Senthil Veeraswamy) coerced her into the profession for money (it looks like the girl is an orphan and Kuberan supported her studies and is her guardian). Raghu takes her to his Pollachi house and introduces her parents to Lekha who welcome her. Yet soon Kuberan discovers her whereabouts and threatens the parents of Raghu, and she wants to go home to do more movies with him! (First half reminds you of Achcham Yenbadhu Mrsaiyada (AYM) so much.
Years have gone by, Lekha has made five films now and out of the blue, she is calling Raghu again to tell him she found his long-lost brother Thiru (Sasikumar) in Mumbai. What has happened to Lekha? What did the elder brother of Raghu perform in Mumbai? How is he being pursued by the police and gangsters?
From the outset, the movie is not cohesive, as we see a lot of continuity problems that we can ignore in view of the lag, but what happened to basic logic? There have been dozens of shootings and killings yet in Mumbai Dhanush is happily walking around! Yeah, the love looks beautiful, but where's the soul? There's no convincing bond between the brothers and where's the chemistry? The movie struggles to get you to take care of its characters or sympathize with their condition because everything is communicated by voiceover. We need Gautham scenes and powerful dialogues! What happened to the writer in you?
Although Dhanush gave his best, he's been let down by the story and presentation. He looks good in the scenes of college and the scenes of action, particularly the one that is good inside the lift. Megha Akash is a promising find and looks good. Villain Senthil Veeraswamy looks deadly and is doing well with his part. Darbuka Siva's most anticipated songs are soothing but they look very average. Sasikumar's English-speaking scene evokes accidental laughter.
Overall, Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta is a mishmash of earlier films by Gautham and is a sluggish and rickety ride that will wear you out as long as it reaches its climax. When you decide to look at it, go patiently armed. Much of it.
