Maharashtra Governor SC Jamir has asked the Congress-NCP combine to respect the mandate of the people and form a government as early as possible.
Informing this to a delegation of Shiv Sena-BJP alliance that had called on the governor seeking President’s rule following delay in government formation, Jamir said he had already told the Cong-NCP and was very anxious to have an elected government installed as early as possible.
He told the saffron delegation that he had reminded Chief Miniter Ashok Chavan and NCP leaders Chhagan Bhujbal and R R Patil yesterday that since the electorate of Maharashtra had given them a fresh mandate, it was their responsibility to respect the mandate and form a government without any further delay.
A delegation of Shiv Sena-BJP leaders led by leader of the BJP in the legislative assembly Eknath Khadse and Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai today met Jamir at Raj Bhavan. They demanded imposition of President’s rule if the Congress NCP failed to form a government within the next 24 hours.
The delegation demanded imposition of President’s rule in the State on grounds of the alleged failure of the Congress-NCP front to form a government even after 14 days of declaration of results, but did not stake claim to form a government as was rumored.
The government is also required to make important appointments like that of the state director general of police following Virk’s retirement, select a new commissioner for BMC, Khadse said.
”The caretaker government of Chief Minister Ashok Chavan should not be allowed to function for an indefinite period. A large number of issues such as malnutrition in tribal areas, declaration of fair price to the agricultural produce, deterioration of law and order in the state were awaiting urgent attention,” he added.
