The USA has failed to get a firm commitment on climate change from China. Both USA President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao offered each other diplomatic assurances but made few commitments.
The Chinese premier outlined some steps but provided no specific numerical targets for reducing greenhouse gas though the two leaders vigorously shook hands at the summit. The USA has slapped punitive tariffs on all Chinese-made tyre imports. The move had upset China at a time when Obama wants Beijing's help on climate change and nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea.
Obama said he was looking forward to visiting China in November, a trip that has long been expected as part of Obama's trip to Asia to attend a forum of Asia-Pacific leaders in Singapore.
