Washington, Nov 3 (PTI) Noting that it has a big stake in Afghanistan, the US today said it is prepared to work with President Hamid Karzai who was re-elected "according to Afghan laws" to help his government provide security to the people.
"We are prepared to work with this partner who was elected according to Afghan laws in an election that was conducted by Afghan institutions," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters here.
"We have a big stake in Afghanistan. The international community has a big stake in Afghanistan. We stand ready to support them as they go forward," he said.
"We've seen is a process that was very difficult, that was conducted according to laws that were laid down by the government and legislature of Afghanistan. These were the first-ever totally Afghan-run elections," he said.
